Down in Woods Canyon grows a small little sycamore tree. It's nothing spectacular, just another perch for birds as they look out across the meadow. But in the fall – the Southern California fall, which is barely distinguishable as a season for all our evergreen flora – it is the only tree around that turns color, glowing like a yellow beacon when the sun climbs over the ridge and floods the meadow in light. It's a brief moment, and it is magical.
